Subject expertise
Up-skilling non specialists in your school and a National KS4 Subject Database connecting you to specialists in other schools
Improving subject knowledge is always an uphill struggle, mainly because teachers are so time poor.
How do you close all the subject knowledge gaps in all teachers when you’ve only got 30 minutes of CPD time a week, there’s so much content to cover, and each teacher has different knowledge gaps?
It’s a perpetual problem with annual staff turnover, and even more challenging as the recruitment and retention crisis bites.
This week we have two things to help:
a master class on how to support non specialists and ECTs
a database that will let you find subject specific expertise in other schools
Hope you find them useful.
🧑🏫 How to Upskill Non-Specialists and ECTs in Curriculum Implementation
Increasingly, non specialists and ECTs are picking up the slack presented by the current climate.
So how can we provide them with subject knowledge CPD that will help them to deliver great lessons every time?
Join us to watch this masterclass in which you’ll learn how to:
Support non-subject specialists and ECTs with developing subject knowledge and pedagogy
Use videos to model explanations
Use Kotter's 8 step cycle of change model to drive improvements in a department

📊 Finding subject expertise via the National KS4 Subject Database
Making connections with the people who teach your subject is really hard.
Especially when you are looking to do it across schools or you teach a ‘smaller’ subject.
That’s why we’ve built the National KS4 Subject Database
Watch this video to see how it works 👇
What is it?
The updated National KS4 Subject Database lets you look up any school in the country by the specific subjects/qualifications they offer, how many they run and how many entries they make per subject.
You can also sort and filter them according to size, progress, Ofsted, % EAL / SEN / DA and more.
Once you’ve found schools that you’d like to meet you can ask us to put you in touch so you learn from each other.
How does it work?
1. Choose a subject you want learn more about
If you want to meet and learn from people who do your subject, first you need to find schools who offer it.
Toggle the “subjects offered” drop down.
Below we selected “Business”.
2. Sort and filter to find schools like yours
Context is key.
But finding schools like yours that you want to learn from is tricky.
Sort and filter by no. of students, progress, disadvantage, EAL, SEND and more.
Below we chose schools with 200-249 pupils at the end of KS4 and Progress of +0.5 and higher.
3. Meet and learn with the members who work in those schools
There are 2 really useful features here.
One, you can watch sessions run by colleagues who work at these schools.
Two, you can click the ‘meet people in this school’ button to request an introduction - we’ll do our best to connect you (with their permission)
So far members who have accessed it have:
reached out to other schools to share practice
made evidence based decisions about whether they should do 3 options or 4
improved the mix of options, courses and qualifications they offer to better meet student need
made efficiency savings and impact gains by reviewing their curriculum/staffing model against similar schools
If you use / have used it, we’d love to hear what you have used it for in the comments here.
